About Sulden am Ortler - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Sulden am Ortler – At the foot of the highest mountain in South Tyrol!
Sulden is situated at the foot of the Ortler (3,905 m), Southern Tyrols highest mountain. The resort in which mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner found his second home and established a flock of yaks on the alpine pastures welcomes winter sports enthusiasts in a ski area on 1,900 - 3,250 m altitude with guaranteed snow all winter. In Sulden, leisure time fun can not only be had on the slopes: explore the beautiful landscapes of the Stilfserjoch National Park on hikes and romantic horse-drawn carriage rides.
SkiThe ski area Sulden entices its visitors with great reliability for snow from November until May, and is still a manageable area. 44 km of diverse pistes are available on the glacier - something for every skill. 13 lifts take you comfortably up the mountain, including the largest aerial cable car in the Alps: the 4 gondolas can manage up to 110 persons each. Newly added is the 10-person cabin lift, the so-called Rosim lift, which transports you to the ski area at the Kanzel. Besides the Langenstein ski area, this is a great place for experienced riders. The now easily accessible panorama piste runs over 2.5 km length and 650 m altitude difference right back down to the valley station.
Beginners will feel happy with the practise lifts at the valley station, as well as on the Sonnenhang with it's easy pistes. Even the offers for freestylers are well suited for the fans: besides a fun park at the Madritsch hut, there is also a permanent boardercross run. Freeriders however, will find great deep powder snow runs at the Schöntaufspitze.
Parents can enjoy some free time and leave the kids in the "Kinderland Cevedale" or in the "Yeti Club" where they are well catered for. An entertaining daycare programme awaits them here.
With the lift pass "Skiarena Vinschgau" you have access to a total of 133 km of piste and 39 lifts located in 5 ski areas: Sulden, Schöneben, Haideralm, Watles and Trafoi. (see ski region)
There are plenty of ways to round off your skiing day in Sulden. The ski hut near the valley station, the Cafe Ilse, and the Diskothek Après Club are just a few examples of places to explore. Whoever is looking for good food with Vinschgauer specialities can meet up in places such as Bambi's Pub, Hartmann's Weinstube, or in the Bärenhöhle.
The afternoon, however, can still be quite active, with activities such as a hike through the wondrous, snowy landscape of the Stilfserjoch national park, or a tobogganing party on the 2 km long toboggan run. Pleasure seekers can take a visit to the one of the wellness centres in the area, such as the "Sport Well" in Malles Venosta. For the Alpinists, the Messner Mountain Museum Ortles would certainly be of interest.
A special experience for cross-country skiers is the approx. 7 km long, high altitude track of Sulden, at a height of 1,900 m with views of the Ortler, Zebru, and the Königsspitze. A further track can be found near Trafoi, of which runs directly by the pilgrimage Drei Brunnen and is approx. 6 km long.
For those cross-country skiers who are looking for a little more diversity, a trip to the Nordic Ski Centre in Schlinig is worthwhile, with the location being the venue for the junior cross-country skiing world cup in 2008, and 15 km of tracks. Another trip to make would be to the Biathlon Centre Martell, with its 12 km of tracks and a shooting range (biathlon).
