Town roots are similar to those of many Italian cities founded by the Etruscans and inhabited by Cenomani (population Gaelic), developed by the Romans as a military colony.

In Mantova was born Virgil, one of the largest ancient poets. In the seventh century it was part of the Lombard and X suffered a first century urban reorganization made by the Canossa family.
