About Ortisei - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
The name comes from the Latin word Urtijëi language and -etum Urtica suffix meaning "place of nettles".
From 1860-1914 Urtijëi experienced a relevant growth due to the opening of a main road linking the main railway Val Gardena; As a result, local woodcarving industry flourished.
International tourism developed by discovering the Dolomites first English tourists, and later visitors from other parts of Austria-Hungary and the German Empire.
Currently, the city's economy relies more on tourism winter ski tourism, summer hiking, and woodcarving.
Ortisei | Urtijëi (Ladin, pronounced [uʁtiʒɜi̯] About this sound Listen (help · info); German: St. Ulrich in Gröden; Italian: Ortisei [ortizɛi]) is a town of 4637 inhabitants in South Tyrol in northern Italy.
It occupies the Val GARDENA Dolomites, a mountain chain that is part of the Alps
