The region is bordered to the north and northeast with Austria, to the northwest of Switzerland, west of Lombardy and Veneto to the south and east. The defining element of the landscape is the mountain range of the Alps, particularly the Dolomites.
The highest peak is the Ortler with a height of 3.905 meters. The most important river is Etsch (Adige Italian, hence the name of the Italian South Tyrol: Alto Adige = high area of Adige).
