About Antholz - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Antholz - downhill and cross-country ski enjoyment!
Antholz (1,241 m) stretches into the 21 km long Antholz Valley, a narrow side valley of the Val Pusteria. At the end is Lake Antholz, with the majestic Hochgall (3,435 m) rising over it. The glacier belongs to the Riesenferner Group, which connects the valley with Austria through the "Staller Sattel" Pass. Antholz is known, above all, as a cross-country and biathlon paradise: the annual biathlon world cup is held here, and the 2007 biathlon world championships was held on the local tracks. Antholz also offers quite a bit to alpine skiers and boarders. The blue pistes on "Riepenlift" in Mitter Valley are perfectly suited for beginners and young skiers.
Not far from Antholz (approx. 15 minutes) is the Plan de Corones ski area, which complements your ski enjoyment with over 119 kilometres of piste and lovely ski lodges. The ski area is easily and comfortably reached with the free ski bus! In addition to the pistes, the two toboggan runs "Staller Sattel" (5 km long) and "Steinzgeralm" (2.5 km long), as well as the ice skating rink, ensure additional winter fun. Various tours through snowy, fairy-tale landscapes and crunching snow await hiking enthusiasts.
SkiThe ski area around Plan de Corones (2,275 m), South Tyrol's no. 1 ski mountain, offers more than just a little skiing fun with the lift pass "Kronplatz". Thanks to the several snow-making systems, the area is snow-secure from December to April. 119 kilometres of piste and 32 modern lift systems between 973 - 2,275 m provide unforgettable ski enjoyment for big and small.
Beginners, children and families will love "CroniExpress" with its 8-person gondola; here you will find a 100 m wide piste with a 160 m difference in altitude. The Plan de Coronoes is known as a very child friendly ski area with many attractions for the small ones. For instance, "Croniworld" can be found at the peak of Plan de Corones, where parents can watch their children's progress and at the same time enjoy a beautiful 360° panorama.
The "Sylvester" and "Herrnegg" valley runs, however, challenge even experts and experienced alpinists! Two floodlit pistes are available for night skiing. Snowboarders can burn off steam on the half-pipe. No other ski area is so diverse and varied as Plan de Corones! The area is also known as host to various sports events, e.g. Snowboard World Cup, Biathalon World Championship or the international Valle di Casies run, the largest sporting event in South Tyrol.
During the previous season the Plan de Corones was upgraded: the popular Sonnenlift was replaced, completely renewed and many new features like heated seats and protective covers were added. The Miara cabins now have free Wi-Fi and the artificial snow-making facilities were improved.
At many ski pass sales locations in the "Kronplatz" ski area, you have free-of-charge access to Wi-Fi hotspots. With an upgrade to the "Dolomiti Superski" ski pass, even more hotspots in mountain railway stations and in restaurants in the different ski areas are available.
During the biathlon world cup that takes places every January, Antholz is a turbulent spot! The international audience celebrates some specially organised après ski parties together, turning night into day. During the rest of the year, relaxation seekers and families really get their money's worth. The typical bed and breakfasts and restaurants in the various districts spoil their guests with national and international dishes. Those looking for a more lively evening will find just the thing in nearby Plan de Corones: the après ski bars at the valley station in Reischach, as well as in Olang and St. Vigil, invite you to party.
Antholz also offers interesting alternatives during the day. It's possible to dare a racing run down the toboggan run on Lake Antholz or get to know a new side of the snowy landscape on a snowshoe hike. Ice skating fans are well provided for. Rest and relaxation can be found in the pools and saunas of the various hotels or at the pool complex "Erlebnisbad Cron4" in nearby Reischach.
Plan de Corones has a total of 226 km of marked track for both classic and skating styles. With 42 km, the Valle di Casies track is the region's longest. This is the spot where the annual Valle di Casies run takes place, the largest sporting event in South Tyrol and a highlight for all cross-country enthusiasts.
The Antholz Valley is known well outside the Italian border as a cross-country and biathlon Mecca! 70 kilometres of the best prepared tracks in various degrees of difficulty can be found in this idyllic valley, where the biathlon world cup annually takes place. The biathlon world championships have already been held five times, the last time in 2007, in the biathlon stadium "Südtirol Arena", situated near Lake Antholz. The tracks run largely at about 1,600 m and are very snow-sure.
The 10 km long high-altitude track at "Staller Sattel" is at a great 2000 m and offers wonderful views of the frozen lake. There are even circuits on the lake, under appropriate weather conditions. Numerous biathlon and cross-country courses are offered for those who would like to learn more about the sport.
