Bormio - skiing on world-class pistes
Bormio, one of the most renowned wintersports resorts in Italy, is situated close to Switzerland at the foot of the Stilfserjochs. The over 2000 year old health resort is situated at a basin valley between the majestic mountains of the Ortler group. Bormio is particularly well-known as the venue for the alpine ski world championship in 1985 and 2005.
In addition, the world cup race at the famous "Stelvio" descent takes place here between Christmas and New Year. Not only experts will get their money's worth in Bormio, all abilities are sure to enjoy the skiing, due to the broad slopes above the treeline.
SkiThe lift pass "4 Valli" is further also valid outside Bormio in the ski areas Valdidentro and Santa Caterina/Valfurva, for a total of 37 lifts and 80 kilometres of piste. In addition to the ski area’s altitude (1,225 – 3,012 m), various snow-making machines provide snow security. From Bormio you can take the two fast cable cars to the Cima Blanca (3,012 m) the regional mountain. Wonderful pistes, wide and almost free of any fauna in the upper part, lead you down to the valley, including the world cup descent "Stelvio".
A real goody for ski cracks is the 2 km long, black piste "Betulle". Another highlight is the longest slope in Bormio, the "Cima Bianca - Bornio", which has an altitude of 1,787 m and is 8 km long. Fantastic free rider possibilities can be found in the areas "Ortler" and "Cevedale" and boarders can run riot in the "Snowpark Bormio 2000" at the middle station with super pipe, rails and jumps. The flood-lit piste "Stelvio" is 3 km long, but does require some experience. The ski area Valdidentro offers mainly easy to intermediate pistes, while Santa Caterina, home base of the Olympic champion Deborah Compagnoni, mainly offers red and black pistes.
The cosy mountain huts invite you to visit by day. Those who wish to remain active after a day on the piste have the choice between snowshoe hiking, ice skating or paragliding, among others. In addition, there is an indoor pool, solarium, sauna, fitness centre as well as a hot spring. Bormio is an animated winter sports resort- evenings included! The village centre offers many cosy cafés, bars and pubs, typical restaurants and pizzerias as well as a disco. A walk through the picturesque old city is in any case worthwhile.
Bormio's various thermal baths are a great place to relax and unwind after a long day on the pistes. For all shopping connoisseurs and shopaholics alike, we recommend a day trip to the shopping paradise of Livigno with its duty-free shops offering great brands and luxury items at bargain prices!
In Bormio you will find a 5 km long trail suitable for intermediate skiers for classic as well as skating style. Use of the network is free of charge. In Santa Caterina however, especially the more experienced skiers will find what they are looking for: a good 18 km of tracks, some also used for the world championship, require some good training. However there is a fee of €5 per day which has to be paid for accessing the network.
Drenched in flood lights you can try the Loipe Alù (2 km long) in Bormio or the Pista Viola (15 km long) in Valdidentro. The Viola trail all around Valdidentro offers further 25 km and a variety of different and diverse sections for all cross-country skiers. This track is known to be one of the most beautiful and best in the region!
