San Candido – experience Italian hospitality!
The friendly small town of San Candido (German: "Innichen") is located at an altitude of 1,175 m in Hochpustertal on the border of Austria. Surrounded by the wonderful peaks of the Dolomites and the dark moor lakes, this family-friendly town not only offers beautiful nature due to its special location in Sesto Dolomites nature reserve but also lots of fun. The pleasant pedestrian area invites you to enjoy a shopping trip and is definitely worth a visit. But of course, first and foremost, numerous pistes ensure fun and action. Around San Candido, there are also good possibilities for going tobogganing, on a snow shoe hike and for ski tours.
SkiWith the lift pass "Drei Zinnen Dolomiten" you have access to approx. 110 km of pistes, accessible via 49 lifts. Between the resorts of Sesto, San Candido and Dobbiaco, the Hochpustertal offers several nice little ski areas with huge variety: smooth pistes for beginners and families, demanding descents for both intermediates and wallowers and extreme slopes at Raut and Holzriese for pros to show off their skills.
In San Candido itself there are 8,5 km of piste available in the Haunold ski area. The ski area Sexten/Helm - Rotwand, easily reached from Sesto and Vierschach, offers the largest selection of pistes with approx. 75 km. Some particularly challenging pistes, such as the "Holzriese 2" run, which is one of Italy's steepest pistes, lead by below the cliffs of the Rotwandspitze. This run has a 71% decline and spans 700 m with an altitude difference of 300 m. Those who dare to take on the entire valley can have a go on the "Giro Delle Cime" (Sesto Dolomite Round). This day trip takes you across five mountains and around 30 km of piste, crossing 9,700 altitude meters.
There are snow parks with tables, slides and jumps for freestylers and snowboarders at the chairlift in Helm, as well as at the Rienz lifts in Dobbiaco.
You can end a day's skiing quietly in the family-friendly skiing area. Or all the same you can of course comfortably end the day in the traditional huts or typical restaurants and cafés. If you want to carry on being active off-piste, there are various skating rinks and toboggan runs nearby.
For something quieter there are winter hiking trails where you can peacefully enjoy the wonderful view of the Dolomites. Another option is snow shoe hiking, which you can also take part in as a guided tour. A more comfortable alternative is a horse-drawn sleigh ride.
Directly in San Candido is an adventure pool, "Acquafun" where young and old can both relax and have fun after a long day's skiing.
With a total of more than 200 km of groomed trail, Hochpustertal is a real cross-country paradise and therefore is part of the biggest cross-country association "Dolomiti Nordicski" in the world (with a total of 1,300 km of trails).
Being a venue of international world-cup races, the region has the best prepared cross-country trails, of all difficulty levels. The trails partly offer wonderful views of the Dolomite mountains. An especially attractive trail is the one that leads to the Toblacher lake. At the modern Nordic Arena, cross-country skiers can make use of the services offered there, as well as a cross-country school and public showers. Also there are various round-tracks between 2.5 km and 10 km length, which are used from pros and amateurs alike for training. The use of the trails has to be paid for locally.
In San Candido, there are approx. 22 km of trails. Fans of Nordic skiing also have direct access to the cross-country trail network of Drei Zinnen Dolomiten, with more than 200 km of prepared and connected trails at all levels of difficulty.
