About Maggiore Lake Area - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
It is the second largest lake in Italy and largest of southern Switzerland.
Lake and its shoreline are divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy and the Swiss canton of Ticino.
Located halfway between Lake Orta and Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore extends for approximately 65 km (40 miles) between Locarno and Arona.
Lake Maggiore is 64.37 km / 34¾ nautical miles long and 3-5 km (2 to 3 miles) wide, except at bay opening westward between Pallanza and Stresa, where is 10 km (6 mi) in level.
It is the longest Italian lake, Lake Garda although has a larger area. Average height above sea level is 193 meters; a deep lake, the bottom is almost everywhere below the sea at its deepest, 179 meters below.
It is very sinuous shape, so that there are several points of any substantial part of its area can be seen at a glance.
If this decreases the apparent size effect, it increases the variety of its landscape. While the top is completely alpine character, the middle region lies between gentle hills shaped, and the lower end brink of advancing to the plains of Lombardy.
Lake Maggiore is the most westerly of the three large pre-alpine lakes in the south, the other being Lake Como and Lake Garda.
Lake Maggiore weather is generally mild. It is known for its Mediterranean climate, where it can grow subtropical plants.
In winter, the lake helps maintain a higher temperature region (from water releases heat energy more slowly than air).
Temperatures are cooling summer breeze blowing on the surface to change color. The area enjoys nearly 2300 hours of sunshine a year and an average annual temperature of 15.5 ° C (60 ° F).
The lake water has a comfortable temperature of 20 ° C (68 ° F) to 22 ° C (72 ° F) in July and August. In winter snow it is irregular and primarily affects the higher altitudes.
Rainfall is heaviest in May and lowest in winter.
