Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, at the mouth of the river Màzaro, it is less than 200 km from the Tunisian coast of North Africa.
Historic old town, once enclosed within Norman walls, includes many monumental churches, some dating back to the eleventh century. It shows the typical characteristics of neighborhoods in urban layout typical Islamic Medinas, called Casbah (also Kasbah), whose narrow streets are a kind of brand.
