About Merano - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Merano - cultural diversity and winter sports fun!
The friendly resort Merano combines the amenities of a 35,000 people city with the idyll of the surrounding South Tyrolean mountains. In this small Alpine metropolis there is much on offer, even away from the pistes, e.g.: various shopping facilities, a quaint evening programme, winter hiking trails and a natural toboggan run. The "Therma Meran", designed by the star architect Matteo Thun, pampered its visitors with various indoor pools, a spacious sauna complex and various vitality areas. Empress Sissi had even selected Merano as one of her favourites. Today there is a statue in the ever-green gardens behind the summer promenade to remind one of the many visits of the Empress. In winter of course the main focus is "Off to the mountains!". The pistes are great and especially suited for families.
SkiOn the sunny side of the Alps "Meran 2000" offers a compact ski area with 40 km of piste. Most of these are easy to intermediate skiing and extend from Falzeben (1,680 m) right up to the peak of the Kesselberg at 2,350 m. The 3.5 km long piste from Piffing to Falzeben is lit up once a week and therefore guarantees piste fun until late at night. Children will find a ski kindergarten and a specialised children's ski school (awarded with "Spezialisierte Kinderskischule Südtirol") in Meran 2000, with baby lift for learning and practising with the ski tutors. "Luckis Kinderland", located at the mountain station, is another fact to add to the family-friendliness of this resort. The little ones will find 3 magic carpets and a number of wide, flat pistes to try out first skills or just jump around and have fun, whilst the parents can sit on the terrace of the panorama bistro and watch them from a safe distance. Wallowers will appreciate the Kesselberg and Rotwand pistes, whilst more experienced skiers and snowboarders can try themselves on the Mittagerpiste. Freestylers will find a snow park at the Wallpach piste with rails, jumps and tables to run riot on. Catering comes in form of cosy mountain huts dotted all round the ski area, offering a great selection of Southern Tyrolean specialities and hearty snacks.
Merano has an extensive gastronomic diversity with numerous restaurants, cafés and wine bars. Enjoy a typical Southern Tyrolean evening with regional specialities. Cultural events, shopping facilities and wonderful promenades round off evening programme of your holidays. On the Piffingköpfl there is a 2 km long bob-sleigh run (on tracks), the "Alpin-Bob-Meran 2000" which provides fun for young and old. With up to 45 km/h you can speed down the mountain. If you rather prefer quiet and relaxed, there are 25 km of idyllic winter hiking trails spaced round the ski area Meran 2000. The tourism association Passeiertal also offers guided snowshoe hikes you can participate in. And if you can't part with your skis in the evenings there is also a flood-lit piste in the ski area, which is lit up once per week. Relaxation can be found in the "Therme Meran" where you can benefit from an extensive spa offer portfolio and an arrangement of swimming pools.
Belonging to the ski area Meran 2000 there are 5 k of cross-country tracks available. The access point of this manageable trail network is to be found at the valley station of the Falzeben gondola at 1,680 m altitude. The 5 km long, intermediate track is prepared in skating style. In the region Hinterpasseier there are further 17 km of tracks, where you will also find the longest of the region with 12 km length in total. Approx. 220 m altitude difference can be covered on this track. There is also the possibility to take part in cross-country lessons or have the skis checked over at the service station. Discover these healthy sports in a wonderful landscape and with the freshest mountain air - pure enjoyment!
