Naples is the largest city in southern Italy. It is one of the regional capitals and is located midway between Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei volcanic area.
Naples is situated on the northern shore of the bay with the same name, in south-eastern extremity of the Campanian Plain. South-eastern districts of the city climb the slopes of Vesuvius. In the north-west it is bordered by the Campi Flegrei volcanic area. It lies at a distance of 232 km from Rome.
The city was a Greek colony named Neapoli (new city). Napoli was successively under Romanian domination, Byzantine, Norman.
Naples is the largest city in southern Italy with 1,000,470 inhabitants and the third city after Milan and Rome. In the crowded area of the city live more than 3 million people.
The historic center of the city since 1995 is part of world heritage and is one of the largest urban centers on the Track the list. The historic center is a rectangular arrangement of streets and kept the network established by colonists from Cuma, the founders of the ancient city of Neapolis: Decumano Maggiore (Via today Tribunal bearing the name), Decumano Inferiore (now divided into three sections: Via Maddaloni, Via Benedetto Croce and Via San Biagio dei Libri) and Decumano Superiore (now divided into three sections Via Sapienza, Via and Via Anticaglia Santi Apostoli).
