Olang - wintry idyll at Plan de Corones
Olang is situated at 1,048 m in the heart of Val Pusteria and is composed of the Oberolang, Mitterolang, Niederolang and Geiselsberg districts. The picturesque village at the foot of Plan de Corones is nestled between Alps and Dolomites: surrounded by the impressive Prags Dolomites to the south and the Riesenferner Massif in the north, a fascinating panorama awaits. From Geiselsberg you have direct access to the ski area. A free ski bus runs every 20 minutes from all districts to the valley station Gassl at Geiselsberg in winter.
Modern lift systems, short waiting times, very well prepared pistes and gorgeous views make this ski area one of the loveliest in the Dolomites. Tobogganing fans will also know the name, as the tobogganing world championships were held here for the second time in 2000! Moreover, numerous leisure activities are available, the different restaurants and lodges invite you in for refreshment and you will certainly find just the right souvenir in the shops.
SkiThe ski area around Plan de Corones (2,275 m), South Tyrol's no. 1 ski mountain, offers more than just a little skiing fun with the lift pass "Kronplatz". Thanks to numerous snow-making systems, the area is snow-secure from December to April. 116 km of piste and 32 modern lift systems between 973 - 2,275 m provide unforgettable ski enjoyment for young and young at heart.
Beginners, children and families will love "CroniExpress" with its 8-person gondola; here you will find a 100 m wide piste with a 160 m difference in altitude. The Plan de Corones is known as a very child friendly ski area with many attractions for the little ones, for instance "Croniworld", which can be found at the peak of Plan de Corones, where parents can watch their children's progress and at the same time enjoy a beautiful 360° panorama view. The longest run is the 6 km descent to Olang-Gassl, covering an altitude difference of 1,096 m.
The "Sylvester" and "Herrnegg" valley runs, however, challenge even experts and experienced Alpine enthusiasts! Two floorlit pistes are there for you to enjoy some night skiing. Freestylers can burn off steam on the half-pipe. No other ski area is so diverse and varied as Plan de Corones! The area is also known as host to various sports events, e.g. Snowboard World Cup.
For an even larger selection, you can upgrade to the lift pass "Dolomiti Superski" and choose from 1,200 km of piste and 455 lifts!
In the ski area "Kronplatz" you can access free Wi-Fi hotspots at many of the lift pass offices. Additionally, with the lift pass upgrade to the "Dolomiti Superski" you can make use of further hotspots at the mountain stations and huts within the ski area.
A holiday at Plan de Corones offers variety and fun for big and small! Fun starts on the piste at "Après-Ski Toni" at the valley station in Olang, where skiers toast to the kilometres skied. Countless apres ski bars, discos and pubs throughout the region ensure a fun atmosphere. If you're looking for suitable off-piste alternatives, you won't be looking for long: ice climbing, snowmobiling, taxi bob, snowshoe hiking, riding stables, fitness studios, natural ice rinks with ice hockey and broom ball, curling and natural tobogganing runs.
A total of 200 km of winter hiking paths run through the region, the longest stretch (14 km) being located near Olang. Additionally, Olang is a Mecca for tobogganing fans: the first tobogganing world championships were held here on 1st May, 1971, again in 2000 and the European championships were held here in 2008. The natural tobogganing run stretches a total of 7 km from Oberolang to Brunst-Alm! The 1 km long panorama toboggan run is even one of the most modern toboggan runs in the world.
Moreover, regular horse-drawn sleigh rides, moon and torch hikes, moonlight tobogganing, ski and snowboard races and trekking rides are offered. If you'd rather have a low-key evening on Plan de Corones, you will find wine bars, restaurants or pizzerias, as well as a cinema, library, theatre, concerts and various spa offers.
A 10 km long panorama trial with a gorgeous view of the surrounding winter landscape is found directly at Olang. In total the Anterselva valley offers 60 km and the total Plan de Corones region 226 km of prepared trails, some have even been part of World Cup contests. Just as many skating tracks run parallel.
The "Gsiesertal" trail has the most kilometres, with a length of 42 km. Here you will find the annual Gsiesertal run, the largest sports event in South Tyrol and a highlight for all cross-country fans! Additionally, the Val Pusteria ski marathon is held here each year in January. Trails running through especially lovely landscape can be found in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags nature park at St. Vigil. Great high-altitude trails await you in Anterselva's biathlon centre (approx. 1,650 m), as well as at Peitlerkofel (2,000 - 2,160 m).
