Padua boasts the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, founded in 1545. This objective was included in the UNESCO world cultural heritage list in 1997.
The town is also one of the most prestigious universities in Italy, about 800 years old and Galileo Galilei's astronomical observatory. Market Prato della Valle is the second largest in Europe.
The city is picturesque, with a dense network of arcaded streets that end in large squares, and many bridges crossing the river Bacchiglione arms, which once surrounded the ancient walls like a moat.
