The first inhabitants probably arrived in Indonesia and the Philippines. The first European who visited these lands was Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. But the British were the ones who dominated the trade until 1885 when Pope Leo XIII recognized the Caroline Islands of Spain claims.
Spain controlled the territory until 1899 when sold to Germany. The Germans introduced coconut production and mining of phosphates, and helped eradicate epidemics of dysentery and influenza had reduced the population to about 40,000 to about 4,000.
