Elegant and with an area of outstanding historical, Parma Emilia Romagna region is located between the river Po and the Apennine Mountains, south of Milan and north of Florence.
The foundation of the city is due to the road that connected Rome Via Aemilia northern part of the Roman Empire. Parma influence grew in the sixteenth century, as the seat of the Farnese duchy, is today one of the most prosperous cities of Italy. After extinction of the male Farnese, Parma Bourbons family returned from France.
Marie-Louise was a great patron of the arts, much of its collections being placed in the National Gallery today. In 1859 Marie-Louise was forced to abdicate in 1860 and returned to the kingdom of Italy Parma.
The town was an attraction for lovers of opera and Verdi, the great composer of Aida. He was born in the small village of Ronco, north of Parma, in 1813. In his lifetime, his works echo resounded in the Teatro Regio. Thanks to Verdi, Parma became a center of music.
Starting a walk through the beautiful city in the historic building you can admire the Baptistery, Diocesan Museum, Gallery Stuarda, Cathedral, Ducal Palace, Ducal Park and Palace Eucherio Sanvitale.
Parma is also famous for food and rich culinary traditions. When it comes to ingredients used by cooks to prepare traditional specialties, are famous for Parma ham (prosciutto di Parma) and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, along with the famous Barilla pasta.
In 2004 the city of Parma was appointed head of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).
