Syracuse is a city in Italy, the eastern island of Sicily, the administrative center of the province with the same name.
The old town and the necropolis of Syracuse Pantalica 2005 were included in the UNESCO world cultural heritage list.
Syracuse is one of the oldest cities in the world. Founded in 733 BC Greek settlers from Corinth, was one of the richest and most powerful cities of Greater Greece. In 212 BC was conquered by the Romans. The city of Archimedes (287-212 BC) who had been killed during the battle for the Roman conquest of the city.
In the fall of the Roman Empire (476AD), Syracuse is at the mercy of other peoples: Goths in 493 and 535AD was conquered and annexed by Belisarius Byzantine Empire.
In 878 the Arabs took a large part of eastern Sicily, including Siracusa, the Arabs who remained for two centuries.
The Romans took it from the Arabs for a short period of time, then the Normans (1081) to hold power for more than a century.
Swabians in 1209 led by Frederick II conquered the city. After them came the Spaniards in the 14th century, and built forts and defensive walls around the city.
The devastating earthquake in 1693 and reached Syracuse. The town was completely rebuilt in secolul18, hence the Sicilian Baroque style.
Between 1800 and 1900 Syracuse has experienced a period of economic prosperity, and cultural district, and in 1870 was annexed to Italy.
The city's patron saint is Santa Lucia, was born in Syracuse and her feast day takes place in St Lucia on 13 December.
Visiting Syracuse could start with the old part of town, a neighborhood found out on a small island, Ortega, where you'll find mythic Arethusa Spring. Here you will find numerous medieval monuments very well preserved, but also between Greek and Romanian structures, scattered throughout the city.
