In medieval times, the harbor was frequently attacked by pirates and Saracens, and the enemies of the Kingdom of Naples.
In 1554 about 5,000 people were executed by the Turks because they were too old or infirm to transport merit in slavery.
This annual event is commemorated in a ceremony today degenerated into a kind of summer Halloween.
The city is bordered by Mattinata, Monte Sant'Angelo, Peschici and Vico del Gargano. The coast is interesting geologically. Along the city there are two large, straight beaches.
