In the 1930s, there were about 30,000 tourists a year, with about 80 hotels. Benito Mussolini had a villa built here in 1934. After World War II, the tourist flow was enhanced by his choice as a holiday resort by many famous people, such as Pelè, Mina, Ugo Tognazzi, Vittorio De Sica, Romano. Mussolini (jazz painter and pianist), Maria Scicolone (Sofia's sister Loren), Pacifico Marchesini (bon-viv / Italian diplomat) and others.
Since the 1930s, Riccione has achieved the status of the main destination of summer tourism on the Adriatic Riviera of Romania and, together with Rimini, is one of the most popular resorts on the coast of northern Italy. Every two years there is a festival called Festival Del Sol.
Tourism in Riccione is massive, mostly involving young people attracted by its great nightlife. The Adriatic coast of Emilia Romagna is called Riviera Romagnola and has a lot of night clubs. Also, Riccione attracts families with children, because of its theme parks, hotels organize children's meetings all day at the hotel and on the beach.
One of the main events on the beaches of Riccione is the pink night, when the city turns pink. There are beach parties all night for a whole weekend and you can see the Adriatic coast becoming pink for all the magnificent fireworks.
